Dissatisfied & The Theoretical Individual
by Stephen Mooney
[ poetry - january 05 ]
Dissatisfied
Thick air tonight around my vocal cords
and these...just in the way... move please;
and at this time of night, hardly a reas-
onable attitude to hold towards
the sodden art of communication.
And this damn phone has swallowed my money
with nothing to show...Oh, that's not it;
a too long academic sweaty sit-
ting has diminished and frustrated me,
whetting slow undischarged irritation.
On the tube home, digest myself slowly
aware of the discomfort of the trip;
feeling inexpressive blind thoughts eclip-
-se the moon of my reason in wholly
indigestible steps from the station
to my own front door, that also to rile
me, these pent-up words in my throat, many
of whom I couldn't say to you any-
way what's the point in having a mobile
phone carried in studied hibernation
Answer the damn thing, or simply tell me
that you don't want to meet tonight, don't leave
me to my own thoughts, oiling and deceiv-
ing my senses, themselves ashamed to be
prey to my own unworthy suspicion.
There, I have admitted my hybridity
The Theoretical Individual
The Theoretical Individual divests himself of all meaning,
meaning that he himself has decried all insight
barely insight of that which defines his own reality.
Dexterous in context, he claims the reality of relevance;
individual bite-sized pieces of relevance.
And .. Welcome To The Turn Of The Millennium;
the Theoretical Individual moves and the world stands still;
he shaves his head - philosophies and numbers
and numbers his heads among philosophers:
the Delicious Thinker.
His dress is Dress, tastes never less
than Accurate;
his rhyme is effeminate, his reason the acute;
Que es mas macho?
The Theoretical Individual's metaphorical 'he'.
The Theoretical Individual inhabits a bar wearing his individuality
on his nose, yet thinks in terms of contact lenses..
His is the exploration of the self that defines his Other
(pause for academic stiffening...) as himself -
desperado - his mind is superficially complete:
"the river is ablaze tonight, and London is its bloom".
HisHerIts talk of the mundane, words of populism and self-complacency,
dressed in terms of dissuasion seeks then to Justify, Specify, Clarify
his superficiality through the opposition of a self
that has ceased, perhaps, to exist
and so excuses his disinterest.
and I am being unfair
The Theoretical...
Individual
Devastates.
and I am being The Theo
