Fascists built all the best buildings
by Jason Monios
[ poetry - april 09 ]
I love a piece of elegant design;
baroque and complex, perfect symmetry.
I love the entrance stairway's curved incline
like Mussolini loved his balcony.
Pompous music and orderly marching
seem to overcome me naturally
when I linger overlong admiring
grand train stations in northern Italy.
We can blame past regimes for ancient wrongs
but hand in hand back to the time of kings
despots and design have always got along.
If you like grand gestures and the finer things
you know the devil has all the best songs
and the fascists built all the best buildings.
