Paleontology
by John Dutterer
[ poetry - november 11 ]
Departure:
City mutilated
by canals
canals such
autumnal snapshots
of sepia years
Years adding
absences to
strands of households
turning white
with surprise
Through:
Hills with
full beards
of forestation
flaunting invincible
leafage where
light
is imprisoned
Hills lapping up
polka-dot rainfall
with gusto
Toward:
April flickering
on weary
retinas
glandular love
for these roads
merciful the exit
we are eating
the well-worn air
we are going
home.
