The nineteen sparrows

by Linda Benninghoff

[ poetry - november 08 ]

Billy told me the story
of when he was twelve
sending nine to recover
and ten to heaven
with a toy gun.

I seemed to rest easily
in his arms. Trees swayed
around us. Only the birds
in the park sat warily
on their branches, and gave away
their tension with constant song.
