Time
by William Aarnes
[ poetry - september 07 ]
The only customers
in the shop today
a cuddling couple
just spending time.
They lingered over the table
of candy dishes,
the woman lifting each lid,
saying to the man,
"Please, have a kiss."
He'd already opened
the woman's car door
before he came back in
to nod a "Thanks."
That was three hours
befor locking up,
time to finish pricing
a pile of Life.
Time now to brush
the dusting of snow
off the pickup.
And time to feel foolish -
the windshield blurring over -
about not taking the time
to do anything
about the mice nesting
in the heater ducts.
