time you have

by Huck Olsen

[ poetry - september 09 ]

time you have forsaken us
let us live too long
and now the eye of dying
winks too late for comfort
reality has smacked us
coldly into sobriety
we can never go back
to those years of narcotic potential
but now must face
the blue lake at dawn
with numb hands cupping breadcrumbs
and ducks quacking ceaselessly at our ankles
